Many parents enroll children in their neighbourhood’s elementary school, while others may select a different school depending on its focus on the arts, sports, sciences, language/culture or proximity to their workplace.
In Alberta, children are required by law to attend school, and elementary education ranges from kindergarten (for five to six year olds) to grade six (for 11 to 12 year olds).
All programs and schools follow the curriculum set out by the province’s Department of Education. There are also many alternative programs available, including special education, homeschooling, English as a second language, focus on a language or culture, and more.
If you are looking for an elementary school, the Calgary Board of Education has details on each of the 131 public elementary schools in the city.
