Overview

Calgary Taxation

Taxes are low in Calgary: there is no provincial sales tax and the city has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Canada (10 per cent).

If you’re a business owner, you can benefit from the fact that Alberta has no inventory tax, no machinery or equipment tax, and no payroll tax.

Alberta is also the only Canadian province with a flat personal income tax rate (10 per cent): other Canadian provinces have a sliding scale.

Property Taxes

Residential property taxes in Calgary are the lowest of any major city in the country: 40 per cent lower than Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, and nearly 50 per cent lower than Vancouver.

Calgarians receive value for their property tax dollars too: the money received pays for the municipal infrastructure, programs and services that support and enable Calgary’s excellent quality of life.

Property taxes cover much of the cost of maintaining:

  • Police, fire and ambulance services
  • Parks, pathways and playgrounds
  • Roads, bridges and transit systems
  • Libraries, garbage and recycling services
  • Recreation centres

In addition, family-favourite attractions like the Calgary Zoo, Heritage Park and Fort Calgary are supported.
