The Calgary Stampeders, the city’s Canadian Football League (CFL) team, have been a fixture in the city since 1945. The “Stamps” play at McMahon Stadium in northwest Calgary, with the first game usually scheduled around Stampede time in early July.
The Labour Day Classic (against the rival Edmonton Eskimos), and Thanksgiving Day Classic (against the Saskatchewan Roughriders), are major city events that are always sold out. In total, there are eight Canadian teams that spend the season battling each other in an effort to win the CFL’s prestigious Grey Cup.
Canadian football is very similar to American gridiron football, sharing the same origins, but there are some significant differences in rules that make it unique.
