Nose Hill Park – covering approximately 1,127 hectares (11.27 square kilometres) in northwest Calgary – is a unique prairie grassland environment.
Deer and coyotes can be seen roaming the grasslands and coulees here, while from the park’s plateau, there are vistas of the Rocky Mountains, Bow River Valley and vast plains to the east of Calgary. The park is also home to porcupines, gophers, ground squirrels, and several species of mice and voles, which draw the keen eyes of hawks, which are often seen in the skies above the park.
The park is also archaeologically important, with a number of stone-circle tepee rings from the area’s first human inhabitants. Because of its height, the hill was a sacred place used for ceremonies and burials.
The hill gets its name from the fact that – from certain locations and with a little imagination – it looks like a nose. It can be reached at 5620 - 14th Street NW.
