The Calgary Dragon Boat Races take place in late July every year in Glenmore Park.
A dragon boat is about 12 metres in length, with a dragon’s head at the front and a tail at the back, and holds 20 paddlers, one drummer and one steer-person.
Calgary teams compete in several classes to qualify for the Canadian Dragon Boat Championship in Vancouver, and then the World Dragon Boat Championship in Hong Kong.
The event brings together over 50,000 spectators and 3,000 paddlers and volunteers, as teams race their way across the Glenmore Reservoir.
