Established in 1975, the New Gallery is an active artist-run centre that presents and promotes contemporary art from its home in Eau Claire Market in downtown Calgary.
Artist-run centres emerged in the early 1970s in several Canadian cities. The venues, also called parallel galleries, developed as a response to a lack of appropriate exhibition space for artists whose priorities were non-commercial, or who were not established enough in their careers to show work at institutional or public galleries.
Contemporary art exhibitions at the New Gallery run for one month at a time.
