The Art Gallery of Calgary is a public art venue on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary that presents contemporary pieces and provides art education programs.
The gallery presents 16 innovative contemporary art exhibitions a year, showing both group and solo pieces by local, national and international artists in its four galleries. Exhibitions include a range of mediums, from multimedia and installation work to sculpture, painting and photography.
Formed in 1977 – originally occupying space on the second floor of the Memorial Park Library – the gallery grew its area of focus through the 1980s to include art education programming and the works of artists from across western Canada. In 2000, with strong support from the Calgary community, the Art Gallery of Calgary opened its doors at its current home.
The gallery’s education programs are available for school groups, with nine in-gallery sessions and six in-classroom art workshops. Public programs are also provided, including artist talks, family days and painting classes.
The Art Gallery of Calgary is at 117 - 8th Avenue SW.
