Originally founded in 1972 as a children’s company specializing in historical plays, after nearly 40 years of performances, Alberta Theatre Projects, ATP, is one of the largest professional theatres in Canada.
ATP has taken a significant role in the artistic and cultural fabric of Calgary: by the end of last year, they had produced 333 plays – 234 of them Canadian – and put on over 5,000 performances.
The company’s current home is the 480-seat Martha Cohen Theatre in downtown’s Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. The Georgian design takes inspiration from a time when homes were built around an internal courtyard, and travelling theatre groups could perform in an outside space with audiences hanging out of their windows for a view of the action below.
The company also stewards the wonderful Enbridge playRites festival that sees the development and production of original material for Calgary audiences, as well as national and international producers.
