Calgary is the North American hub for the Pacific Northwest by road, rail and air, and has the strongest transportation and logistics sector of any western Canadian city based on employment.
In 2010, the total number of employees in this sector made up 5.5 per cent of Calgary’s workforce. With the city’s unprecedented growth in recent years, there are 58.6 per cent more people employed in transportation and logistics in Calgary than there were 1994.
The Calgary International Airport, Canadian Pacific Rail, Canadian National Rail, Calgary Transit, and any number of shipping and warehousing companies are all tremendous sources of local employment.
But the backbone of the city’s transportation industry has always been the long-haul trucking business.
Calgary is in a good position due to its location: situated on two of North America’s largest highways. The Trans-Canada Highway runs from the east coast to the west coast (and straight through Calgary), while the CANAMEX Corridor runs north to south from Mexico City to Alaska.
