Calgary’s Technology Industry

Over half of Alberta’s fastest-growing companies are information and communications technology (ICT) companies.

This growth is readily apparent in the Calgary region, with the city being home to the largest number technology startups per capita in Canada. In fact, the city has the second-highest concentration of ICT employees per capita in North America, trailing only the very-wired San Francisco.

The ICT industry is made up of five main sub-sectors:

  • Information technologies
  • Electronics
  • Wireless and telecommunications
  • Geomatics
  • Digitial media

In 2010, Calgary’s 2,468 ICT companies employed 22,800 people, representing almost 4.6 per cent of the total workforce.
