McKenzie Towne, a young residential community in the outer ring of Calgary’s southeast, was built with a unique philosophy in mind: create a small town within the larger city.
The neighbourhood is based on the new urbanist movement, which strives to design walkable communities with a range of housing and job types. As such, the ‘town’ has everything you might expect from a standalone community: independent storefronts, single-family homes, condos, apartments, churches and schools.
McKenzie Towne has four main areas – Inverness, Elgin, Prestwick and High Street – and each boasts distinct but complementary design styl es.
In 2006, the population of the community was just over 10,000.
There is currently one elementary/junior high school operated by the Calgary Catholic School Board: St. Albert the Great.
A public elementary school is currently being built.
There’s no direct CTrain access, but buses can get you to and from the southern train line. There is also a shuttle bus that operates directly to and from downtown on weekdays.
The main artery for getting to and from McKenzie Towne by car is Deerfoot Trail.
