Strathmore is 40 kilometres east of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway, and offers country living and ‘big city’ access.
Now a town of just under 12,000 residents, Strathmore is a town with excellent business opportunities, affordable housing, educational and recreational facilities, and solid health care centres, including a hospital.
While agricultural developments cover large areas of the Strathmore region, there remain wide choices in restaurants, shopping and accommodations. Think of it as a country town with urban amenities.
Strathmore really started out as a community on July 28th, 1883, when Canadian Pacific Rail workers laid down a significant length of track in the area. These rails would eventually become the end of the line for thousands of Strathmore settlers.
By 1886, an intense advertising campaign launched by the Canadian government to settle the west was beginning to kick in, and Strathmore was booming. This era of immigration lasted well into the 20th century.
The community has a number of schools at all levels, in public, Catholic and alternative school systems. Strathmore’s public school district is the Golden Hills Public School Division, while the Catholic system is under Christ the Redeemer.
Strathmore sits just off of the Trans-Canada Highway: all you have to do is head east out of Calgary on 16th Avenue.
First Student Canada also operates a regular commuter bus between Strathmore and Calgary on weekdays.
