All vehicles in Alberta are legally required to be registered and insured. Upon registration you will be provided with license plates and appropriate registration stickers.

There are different registration requirements depending on your residency status:

• If you are a new resident of Alberta, you must register your vehicle and obtain an Alberta driver’s license within 90 days of moving to Calgary. All vehicles registered in another Canadian province must also pass an out of province vehicle inspection.
• If you are temporarily working in Alberta, but are a legal resident of another jurisdiction, you may continue to use the valid registration and license plates from your home jurisdiction up to a maximum of 183 days in a calendar year.
• If you are staying in Alberta as a full-time student and attending an accredited institution or you are working here as part of a co-op study program, you may use your valid registration and license plates from your home jurisdiction.

Vehicles can be registered and license plates obtained at Alberta registries. Vehicle insurance can be provided by any number of private insurance companies.
