The Calgary Public Library first opened in 1912 in a distinctive sandstone building in Memorial Park on 2nd Street at 12th Avenue SW. While the Memorial Park library still operates today, a larger Central Library can be found right downtown (across from City Hall on the C-Train line at 616 Macleod Trail SE). In total, there are 17 Calgary Public Library branches sprinkled throughout the city, forming the second most used library system in Canada (after Toronto). Through the Calgary Public Library, Calgarians of every age, ability, origin and financial capacity have access to more than 2.8 million books and multimedia, together with computers and a wide range of programs, services and special events. Calgarians visit their Library more than 5.5 million times in a year for research, enjoyment and inspiration.
